Your comprehensive guide to operating and maintaining your sewing machine.

1. Installation

This section guides you through the initial preparation of your Brother LS-1217 sewing machine before its first use.

1.1 Déballage et placement

Carefully remove the sewing machine from its packaging. Retain all packing materials for future transport or storage. Place the machine on a stable, flat surface with adequate lighting. Ensure there is enough space around the machine for comfortable operation and fabric handling.

1.2 Connexion d'alimentation

Connect the power cord to the machine's power input jack, then plug the other end into a standard electrical outlet. Ensure the power switch is in the "OFF" position before connecting. The foot controller also connects to a dedicated jack on the machine.

1.3 Installation de l'aiguille

1.4 Bobinage

Proper bobbin winding is crucial for even stitching.

  3. Insert the thread end into the small hole on the bobbin, from the inside out.
  5. Press the foot controller gently to start winding. Stop when the bobbin is full and evenly wound.
  6. Cut the thread, push the spindle back to the left, and remove the bobbin.

1.5 Enfilage de la machine

Follow these steps for correct upper and lower threading.

Filetage supérieur :

  3. Faites passer le fil à travers le guide-fil supérieur.
  4. Pass the thread down into the tension discs, then up and through the take-up lever from right to left.
  5. Guide the thread down through the remaining thread guides and finally through the eye of the needle from front to back.
  6. Pull about 6 inches of thread under the presser foot and towards the back.

Enfilage inférieur (insertion de la canette) :

  1. Ouvrez le couvercle de la canette.
  3. Guide the thread into the tension spring of the bobbin case.
  4. Fermez le couvercle de la canette.
  5. Hold the upper thread lightly, turn the handwheel towards you to lower and raise the needle, catching the bobbin thread. Pull both threads under the presser foot and to the back.

2. Utilisation de la machine

This section details the basic operations for sewing with your Brother LS-1217.

2.1 Basic Stitch Selection

Your machine offers various stitch patterns. To select a stitch, turn the pattern selection dial until the desired stitch symbol aligns with the indicator mark. Refer to the stitch chart on your machine for available options.

2.2 Fabric Placement

Place the fabric under the presser foot, aligning the edge with the desired seam allowance guide on the needle plate. Lower the presser foot using the presser foot lever.

2.3 Début de la couture

With the presser foot lowered, gently press the foot controller. The machine will begin to sew. Guide the fabric gently; do not pull or push it, as this can bend the needle or affect stitch quality.

2.4 Couture inversée

To secure the beginning and end of a seam, use the reverse stitch lever. Press and hold the lever while sewing to stitch backward. Release the lever to resume forward stitching.

2.5 Finition d'une couture

When you reach the end of your seam, perform a reverse stitch for a few stitches, then release the foot controller. Raise the needle to its highest position and lift the presser foot. Pull the fabric towards the back, then cut the threads using the thread cutter on the machine or scissors, leaving about 4-6 inches of thread tails.

3. Entretien

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and optimal performance of your Brother LS-1217.

3.1 Nettoyage de la machine

Lint and dust can accumulate in the bobbin area and feed dogs, affecting stitch quality. Disconnect the machine from power before cleaning.

  • Use the small brush provided with your machine (or a soft brush) to remove lint from the bobbin case, feed dogs, and surrounding areas.
  • Do not use compressed air, as it can push lint further into the machine.

3.2 Lubrification

The Brother LS-1217 is designed to be largely maintenance-free regarding lubrication. Avoid applying oil unless specifically instructed by a qualified service technician, as improper lubrication can cause damage.

3.3 Remplacement de l'aiguille

Replace the needle regularly (approximately every 8-10 hours of sewing or after every major project) and immediately if it becomes bent, dull, or burred. A damaged needle can cause skipped stitches, thread breakage, and fabric damage. Refer to section 1.3 for installation instructions.
