5. Installation

Follow these steps to prepare your timing light for use:

  1. Préparez le véhicule : Ensure the engine is at operating temperature and turned off. Consult your vehicle's service manual for specific timing procedures and safety warnings. Locate the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley or flywheel.
  2. Connecter l'alimentation :
    • Connectez le rouge power clip to the positive (+) terminal of the vehicle's 12V battery.
    • Connectez le noir power clip to a good chassis ground or the negative (-) terminal of the battery.
  3. Connect Inductive Pickup:
    • Locate the No. 1 spark plug wire. This is typically the wire closest to the front of the engine or as specified in your vehicle's manual.
    • Clip the inductive spark pickup clamp around the No. 1 spark plug wire. Ensure the arrow on the clamp (if present) points towards the spark plug.
  4. Démarrer le moteur: Start the engine and allow it to idle at the specified RPM (refer to your vehicle's service manual).

6. Mode d'emploi

Once the timing light is set up and the engine is running, proceed with timing adjustment:

  1. Dirigez la lumière : Point the timing light at the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley or flywheel.
  2. Observe Timing Marks: The strobe light will flash, making the timing marks appear stationary. Identify the current ignition timing.
  3. Adjust Advance (if applicable): If your vehicle requires an advance setting, use the Dial Advance knob on the timing light to set the desired advance angle. The timing marks will shift, allowing you to align them with the specified timing.
  4. Adjust Engine Timing: If the timing is incorrect, adjust the distributor (for older vehicles) or follow your vehicle's specific procedure to bring the timing marks into alignment with the factory specification while the timing light is flashing.
  5. Vérifier le timing : After adjustment, re-check the timing with the light to ensure it is accurate.
  6. Déconnecter: Once timing is set, turn off the engine, then disconnect the inductive pickup and battery clips in reverse order of connection.

7. Entretien

To ensure the longevity and accuracy of your timing light, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Nettoyage: Wipe the timing light housing with a clean, damp tissu. N'utilisez pas de produits chimiques ou de solvants agressifs.
  • Stockage: Store the timing light in a dry, clean environment, away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.
  • Inspection des câbles : Regularly inspect the power cables and inductive pickup cable for any signs of damage, fraying, or exposed wires. Replace if damaged.
  • Entretien des lentilles : Keep the strobe light lens clean and free of grease or dirt for optimal brightness.

8. Dépannage

If you encounter issues with your timing light, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
